Reasons Why Your Skin Isn’t Glowing

By Valerie

Skin beauty is something that has been a woman’s pride since as far back as I remember, from the little advice of using apple cider vinegar on your face to brighten dark spots, to using toothpaste to dry up pimples. The most barbaric of them all is the use of menstrual blood and semen for facials. There are a lot of hoaxes and exploitation revolving around skin beauty and the day I realized this was when I came up close to an advert for ivory soap on a BRT. Apparently, this soap is supposed to help ladies achieve clear skin but up close I could clearly see the models wearing makeup. In that exact moment I could see a lot of fraud going on.Skin beauty is something that has been treasured for ages. In ancient times amongst Asians, having a scar on your body could shorten your chances of marrying into a royal lineage.Have you been using a thousand and one skin care products with many organic skin products and serums on your face and yet your skin isn’t cooperating? Annoying right? I know. I’ve seen so many women grow weary of their skin conditions and have begun to patronize different organic skin care vendors. Their confidence diminishes as their skin glow diminishes.little girl rolling her eyesWhat if I told you that I had a solution to your problems for a very low price?woman with dark skin stroking frogIt’s simple, just keep on reading! Here are reasons why your skin isn’t giving.

1. You’re using too many products

man saying it's too muchYou’re probably using five different products from different companies. Any time you walk into a store and you see a product with attractive labels, boom! It’s off the shelf and into your cart. You take it home and add it to your many, many purchased products. You could literally open a shop with the number of products you’ve purchased.

2. You need a break

3. You’re not getting enough sleep

No, you probably didn’t know. That’s why you’re not keen on your sleep. It’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason. When you sleep your skin repairs itself. The dead skin cells are shed off and new and healthy ones replace them. During sleep, your skin also builds collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which are the molecules responsible for the skin’s plumpness, translucency, and elasticity.Poor sleep, on the other hand, leads to dehydration and high cortisol levels (a stress hormone) which increases the severity of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne or psoriasis and also triggers the skin’s sebaceous glands to produce more sebum (oil), leading to clogged pores and breakouts.

4. Your diet

dean winchester eating burger in cafe with his brother sam“You’re what you eat” has to be an underrated quote when it comes to health and lifestyle – because eating high sugar, fats, and processed foods puts you at a higher risk of skin inflammations and breakouts.Instead of going for that burger or junk food, switch it up to fruits and vegetables (heavy on the fruits) because they are packed with antioxidants and minerals that are highly beneficial to the skin. Back this up with a lot of water intake and watch your skin glow.

5. Improper use of sunscreen

Sunscreen helps protect your skin from ultraviolet rays from the sun, which make your skin prone to irritation and aging as the rays harshly dry up the moisture in your skin, thus damaging your skin. You’re supposed to reapply your sunscreen every two hours whenever you are outdoors to help protect your skin. You can top this with vitamin C serum for double protection and glow.

6. Organic skincare

They’d mix chemicals and label the mixture as “organic”.It’s obviously organic chemistry and they aren’t certified pharmaceutical companies so obviously you’re going to have adverse effects coming through. Most of these products damage the skin by thinning and bleaching it, making it sensitive to sunlight and prone to irritation. So my advice? Drop those products and go for well-branded skin care products. You can walk into any store and purchase them. Your bank account might feel it but your skin would thank you and finally glow.I’d advise that any young lady out there combating different skin problems should, first of all, understand their skin type and buy products tailored to their skin type. Understand that all these organic vendors are scammers, especially their ambassadors!I’ve seen cases of these vendors hiring girls with clear skin, girls that hardly have breakouts or pimples on their skin (yes, I know them personally) as ambassadors for their brands to push products that would “clear breakouts, pimples, and blackheads”. They’d snap and edit these things with an eye-catching caption on Instagram and boom! Customers would come.Another thing I would advise is that you listen to your body, understand its needs and wants. Maybe you have sensitive skin but you’ve been manhandling it because you haven’t taken out time to listen to it.Also, keeping your beddings clean and changing them regularly can prevent bacteria from infecting your skin and causing inflammation. Having a routine with a small number of products helps to keep your skin in check and unstressed. You can have a routine of:
  1.  Exfoliate (at least twice a week)
  2. Tone/cleanse
  3. Moisturize
  4. Vitamin C with sunscreen
Exercising helps by increasing your heart rate and circulating blood to help keep the skin healthy. It also promotes new skin cells, giving your skin a healthy glow.Lastly, it is vital to keep your mental wellness on par, because happiness gives you some sort of inner glow.
