From Downloading Spotify to Buying Banana Bread: How Mothers Say “I Love You” [Without Actually Saying It]

By Ev

A Mother: A woman in relation to her child/children
A Mother: A woman who brings up a child with care and affection

For the purpose of this article, I will be making use of the second definition, because it is general knowledge that not all mothers… are actually mothers.

I’ve asked a bunch of people to tell us their stories of what their mothers have done for and to them that showed support and care for who they are and the things that they do.

Emanuella, a podcaster, told me that her mother downloaded Spotify for the sole purpose of listening to her podcast, and ensured that her friends downloaded it too. “She also asks them for screenshots of each episode as proof that they listened to it.”

Ini said that her mother is dedicated and invested in all her attempts to lose weight. Her dedication is expressed through her finances. She said, “My mother, every three days, buys blueberries and other healthy food options.”

She also went ahead to say that it didn’t matter if her mum was short on funds, she would do it, and this is a great source of motivation for her, even when she feels like giving up, she knows she can’t.

Damilola used an iPhone 6 for the longest time, even when the phone was fighting for its life and just wanted to go to the heaven of gadgets. Her brother had gotten a new phone, and it seemed that her parents had forgotten that she was in need of a phone. Her mum randomly called her one day in school and told her that she had bought a new phone for her. She had a new phone, and an 11 too! It’s important to point out that she wanted an X.

George asked his mum where he could buy banana bread from because he was planning a picnic. About a week later, his mum randomly bought banana bread because it appeared that he liked it.

Onanefe loves to read. The first time she actually went to a bookstore with her mum, she expressed amazement regarding how many books Onanefe had read. About a year later, her mum travelled and randomly bought her books. Fifteen different books!!

Teni mentioned how her mum always made the time to visit her in school despite her busy schedule.

The beautiful thing about all of these stories is that it personifies a plethora of sacrifices made without requests. Mothers showing up and out, for their children. They may not always verbally express their love, but there are a million other things they do that show they are committed to our happiness.
