How to Do a Breast Self-Exam

Performing a self-examination for breast cancer is simple and can be done in 5 minutes. It is advisable for women to perform the examination after their menstrual cycle because part of the symptoms of menstruation is breast tenderness in some people, so they may mistake this to be a concern.Women who do not menstruate can examine themselves monthly at a particular time. Here’s how to conduct your DIY breast-cancer examination: 1. Visual Check: Resting your arms on your hips without clothes on, examine yourself in the mirror for any observable changes, such as skin dimpling, redness, soreness, black patches, swelling, or a change in the breast’s shape or size. Put your arms over your head while performing the same motions.  2. Manual inspection: Check for any lumps, thickening, or odd movement by pressing on the breast and underarm region with the tips of your right palm’s three middle fingers in a circular motion. Press your nipple to examine for discharge while exerting more pressure on the way you check. Through one hand on your hip and upright, perform this procedure. The identical motion should be repeated on your right breast with your left hand. 3. Manual inspection II: This will be carried out while supine (lying on your back). Set a pillow under your right shoulder while laying on your bed, and position your right hand under your head. To perform the three middle finger checks mentioned above, use your left hand. Next, carry this out by placing your pillow under your left shoulder with your left hand under your head and repeating the same process.
