Why You Need to Shave [and How to Do It Properly]

By Valerie

Shaving has been practised for centuries. As early as the 30th century BC, ladies utilized bronze razors, pumice stones, and depilatory creams (thick substances you apply on your skin to help remove hair) for shaving. Shaving was used to determine social standing and attractiveness.

Is it just about aesthetics then? Well, not really.

The truth is, shaving is more than just about looks. It is also about hygiene, wellness, and a number of other benefits that you would be surprised to hear.

Here are some:

1. Removing dead skin cells

Shaving aids in the removal of dead skin. You actually exfoliate as you shave, gently scraping off the top layer of dead skin cells along with your hair.

This exfoliation leads to new, smooth skin beneath.

2. Helping skin care products soak into your skin properly

By eliminating dead skin cells, shaving helps produce a smoother surface for skincare products to penetrate your skin more effectively.

As a result, your skin is more susceptible to the benefits of your skincare routine after shaving!

3. Removing excess oil and dirt

Shaving can help eliminate extra dirt and oil from your skin by cleaning it while you shave.

When you shave, the shaving cream or gel forms a barrier between the razor and your skin, allowing for a smooth glide that also gently removes debris and oil from your skin’s surface.

So, shaving not only removes undesirable hair but also cleanses your skin!

4. Keeping your skin healthy

When you shave, you keep your skin healthy by removing hair that traps sweat and turns your skin into a breeding ground for bacteria and odour.

5. Giving you good looks

Surprised? I think not!Removing all that hair makes your skin look younger and clearer – and you, more good looking.

How to Shave Properly

As I’ve demonstrated above, shaving is about more than just aesthetics and societal expectations. It packs a lot of other benefits.

So, how do you do it right?

First off, you can choose between waxing, epilators, shaving products, and electric shavers.

However, keep in mind that each method has its drawbacks.  I’d recommend electric shavers and epilators because their drawbacks can mostly be avoided with the proper techniques.

Shaving lotions can irritate the skin, while waxing can cause even more pain, skin burns, and irritation.

1. Exfoliate using a good body scrub

While shaving provides some exfoliation of sorts, exfoliating before you shave helps unclog pores and remove dead skin cells, giving you a far smoother shave.

2. Take a nice warm bath

Taking a warm bath before shaving helps soften your hair and open up your pores for a smooth shave with less irritation. It is also a relaxing way to prep your skin.

3. Pat your skin dry

You need to remove excess moisture from your skin and maintain your body’s natural moisture.

4. Shave in the direction of hair growth

Using your epilator or electric shaver, shave in the direction of your hair growth. This helps prevent irritation and ingrown hair. It also helps you achieve a smoother and cleaner shave. For electric shavers with three heads, shave in circular motions for clean and smooth cuts.

5. Take a bath afterwards

After shaving, take a bath again and moisturize to help soothe the skin and restore moisture. This helps keep your skin feeling refreshed and hydrated.
