Things About Your Menstrual Cycle That No One Told You

By Valerie

As a young lady growing up, I was often taught while approaching puberty that I’d always get cramps towards my period. But nothing prepared me for the things I encountered in my menstrual cycle as I grew up.There’s no manual to this vagina thing, and I doubt anyone knows it all, so here are the things I learned as I got older:

1. Ovulation lust

No one talks about this enough because we are running the heavenly race, but explain to me why I’d just sit down and spontaneously be craving a man.Well, it turns out that during ovulation the hormone estrogen is increased to its peak which equally increases sexual desire. It’s tempting but don’t do it. Otherwise, you’d get pregnant.

2. Anal cramps

This is another aspect of our menstrual cycle that no one ever talks about. Sometimes, during your period, you can experience mind-blowing cramps in your anus. Nothing prepares you for this and there’s no explanation for it.

3. Pseudo yeast infections

This is mostly a reoccurring case, and it takes monitoring to understand the reason behind this. This usually happens due to hormonal imbalances or a lack of a balanced diet. Eating fruits should help resolve this.

4. Change in appetite

Not many people know the reason for this, but some women experience larger appetites during their periods and lesser appetites after their periods. It goes both ways for different women.

5. Change in breast size

This happens due to hormonal fluctuations. Sometimes you’d discover that your boobs are perkier than normal, bigger than normal or smaller than normal. Sometimes this can signal that your period is fast approaching.

6. Falling sick within your fertile period

Towards ovulation, your body’s immune system weakens so that sperm cells can survive in your body and get you pregnant. During this period your body is susceptible to different forms of bacteria. It also doesn’t help that pre-menstrual symptoms mirror early pregnancy symptoms and some malaria symptoms. So sometimes when you’re sick you’d be getting comments like “Are you sure she is not pregnant?”Comments like that can be really upsetting. Some other untold things include:
  • Headaches
  • Eye pain
  • Ovulation cramps
  • Period lust
  • Enhanced sense of smell
  • Skin irritation
  • Change in basal temperature
  • Vomiting
  • Sore nipples
