How to Prepare Asaro

Asaro, also called Yam porridge is a delicious Nigerian yam dish cooked in a well-seasoned pepper mix until soft and fluffy with yam chunks. It is a party favourite, which makes a perfect dinner or lunch.Usually, it is not cooked with added vegetables. Most people add the vegetable after it is cooked to add some green colour to the meal.
Ingredients to prepare Asaro
  • 1 kg white Puna Yam
  • Red palm oil
  • 1 smoked fish
  • 1 tablespoon ground crayfish
  • 1 medium onion
  • Fresh green vegetables
  • Chilli pepper and salt
  • 2 big stock cubes

How to cook Asaro           
Step 1: First, you need to peel and cut the yam tuber into medium sizes. Then, wash the yam cubes and place in a pot.Step 2: Wash and cut the onions into tiny pieces. Grind or blend the chilli pepper and set them aside. Also, if you are using dry fish, soak and pick the bones.Step 3: Pour enough water to cover the yam cubes and start cooking at medium to high heat. If you are using dry fish, add it now.Step 4: When the yam is boiled enough, add the onions, ground crayfish, pepper, stock cubes, palm oil and the smoked fish.Step 5: Cover the pot and continue cooking till the yam is doneStep 6: Add salt to taste and stir very well. Cook at high heat for about 5 minutes. Then, add the green vegetables, stir and leave to stand for about 5 minutes. Serve hot, sit back and enjoy your meal. Finally, using enough red palm makes the meal colourful. Also, you can use dry fish instead of smoked fish.
