Self-Care in Trying Times

woman with proper self-care in trying times

Women need to take better care of themselves. Feminist Digest writer provides a blueprint for self-care in trying times.

Life is full of ups and downs, unfortunately, no one is exempt from this oscillating cycle. It is a reality of human existence that tends to stretch women more than men. This is because women are psychologically wired for relationships and emotionally driven to help the people in their lives. As just one individual, a woman switches into multiple roles of duty as wife, mother, daughter, sister, relative, friend and colleague. These responsibilities are even more cumbersome in patriarchal societies, where men lord over women and rarely lend helping hands.

The daily challenges that spring out from women’s duties can be very overwhelming, not to mention the pressures they face at trying times. Usually, the root cause of challenges and pressures women confront are traceable to their marriages, family relationships, careers, and friendships. Moreover, when unpleasant events in life compound matters, women become more emotionally drained. Happenings like delayed salary, loss of paid employment, kidnapped loved ones, poor performance of children at school, and illnesses of loved ones – especially terminal diseases – deprive them of their normal ways of living.

Women tend to bite more than they can chew just to support the people they associate with. It is important for women to care for themselves with focused attention. If due care is not taken, they can run themselves down and might meet their demise in the process.

Here are four suggestions for feminine self-care when life hands them a bad hand:

1. Self-awareness

As a regular habit, women need to take time to personally work on their physical and mental wellness. This will ensure their overall health and soundness of mind.

Ladies can personally do routine examinations more frequently (daily, weekly) and extensive screenings of their physical bodies at hospitals once or twice yearly. They should have basic healthcare devices to check and chart their body vitals, including blood pressure, blood sugar level, pulse rate and others. These tools help to maintain optimal health conditions and monitor lifestyle changes.

Mentally, women need to observe their behaviours for gaps, and how these impact them and their relationships. Conscious efforts must be on taming and releasing their feelings and reactions, utterances and outbursts, musings, thoughts, and imaginations.

Curbing your emotions pertains to how you communicate with consideration for others. Releasing them means no bottling-up of matters that concern you or your emotions. Cry. Let the tears flow. That is all part of the process – it releases the tension in you.

Shouting at a loved one does not solve that matter – you might need to stifle that scream. At times, womenfolk may opt for therapy consultations in this regard.

2. Do one thing at a time

Ladies can be overladen with tasks, but they cannot do them all at the same time. Multitasking is a good skill, but it does not suit some tasks that demand our personal attention and due diligence.

So, women must prioritize their chores and execute them in the order of priority, only multitasking where appropriate. At times, they might need to continue the next day and reorder the priority list. Women should not overstretch themselves.

3. Request help

One cannot do it all! It pays to delegate tasks and collaborate too.

Women that delegate and collaborate find tasks easy to achieve and are able to effectively deal with many more. At home, learn to ask your spouse or any relation staying with you for assistance.

Do not feel too big, scared, or shy to request their help. Your children or the little ones around you are always excited to help. Just ask and guide them on how to go about it.

The same applies to your colleagues at work, and people in your neighbourhood. Help brings relief, reduces stress, and saves strength for other things.

4. Recreation and leisure

It is important to always include leisure in your personal routine. Recreation in the form of relaxation and enjoyment is critical to your wellness and sanity.

Human beings need something out of the usual to reset, and women are no exception. Vacations, spa treatments, sports, and going to the cinema, are examples of relaxation options.

The effect of leisure is far-reaching, including improved heart health, increased life expectancy, family bonding, and enhanced emotional health among others.

In whatever unpleasant circumstances women find themselves in, they must see themselves as survivors.

Using the above tips, ladies will begin to thrive. Day by day, they will get strengthened. The experience charts a healing trail, a conscious one that takes time and requires their focus on positive engagements.
