How to milk Patriarchy
By Ev
1. Be knowledgeable: the good thing about knowledge is that nobody knows it all, and the better you diversify your streams of knowledge like your income the better for you. This is what I’m trying to say, the knowledge that you have must not be in relation to your work field, just know something that a man doesn’t. the outcome of this is respect, so now, you’re not just a pretty face, you know something too. This does not mean you’re in a competition, but if you see it as one, keep it healthy.
2. Smile: you’d be surprised with how much a request followed with a smile can turn things in your favour. You’ll be getting two things from this, lesser wrinkles and what you want.
3. Be Direct: I know that you think beating around the bush makes you seem humble, but you give people room to find excuses. Say what you want without wasting time, and as shortly as possible. Only explain yourself when asked.
4. Be Confident: the more you sound confident, the more people are ready to listen to what you want. A bonus is that you’re taken more seriously. If you have problems in this area, fake it till you make it. Practice what you want to say, before you say it. This helps too.
5. Set Boundaries: yes, yes, I said you should smile, but it is important that people know that you mean business upon your stating it. There’s no need to play nice so much that nobody knows when you’re joking or otherwise.
6. Learn how to say no: when you say no, and mean it people around you know not to walk over you and dismiss what you say. Maintain eye contact when refusing to something that would not benefit you is an added advantage.
7. Limit show of excessive emotions: the whole world already thinks that women are too emotional to make sound decisions, and I know that you may be frustrated but do not let them see that they’re getting to you. Save your tears and screams for when you get home. There’s nothing about work place environments that are safe enough for you to be expressive emotionally. Keep all emotions in check.
Summarily, we accept that the structures are wired to favour men but, accepting it doesn’t mean we wont milk the advantages we have.
